Welcome to
Bass Sod Farm
We hold no warehouse inventory. Once an order is scheduled, the harvester enters the field that morning and cuts the grass fresh. Pallets move from the row directly onto the truck. By the time our crew arrives at your property, the sod has been off the ground for hours, not days. This allows it to knit into your soil quickly rather than struggle to recover.
The Bass family has held this land in Gladys since 1921, beginning with 200 acres. Tobacco came first, followed by cattle, wheat, and soybeans. Turfgrass entered the operation in 2005, when brothers W.B. and Allen Bass planted 40 acres of fescue and moved the business toward a crop the family had not grown before. Two decades later, our sod farm serving Roanoke covers more than 2,100 acres, with over 250 of them in sod and a team of 25 working it.
Roanoke sits at a higher elevation and runs cooler than the areas closer to our farm, which shapes what we recommend. Our tall fescue and bluegrass mix performs best in the valley and keeps its color through winter. Bermuda and Zeon Zoysia are better suited to full-sun properties, athletic fields, and commercial frontages where heat and wear are the primary concerns. We grow all three, so the recommendation you receive is based on your property rather than on what happens to be in stock.
Experienced
The turf grass installation team serving Roanoke that cuts and lays your grass is the same crew that fertilized it, irrigated it, and watched it come in. That familiarity shows up in tight seams, clean edges, and straightforward guidance on what your property requires.
Precision Equipment
Automated harvesters replaced hand stacking on this sod farm years ago. Rolls come off the field at consistent thickness with square cuts, which speeds up every turf grass installation and makes the pallets easier to work with if you intend to lay the sod yourself.
Timely, Reliable, and Cost-Effective
We quote what the work costs, and we keep the dates we commit to. Most quote requests are returned within a day. If weather or site conditions require a change to your schedule, you hear it from us first.
Your Satisfaction, Our Priority
Before our crew leaves your Roanoke property, we walk the yard with you and review watering for the first several weeks. You should not be left with open questions or a lawn that is only partially finished.
OVER 100 YEARS OF ROOTED EXCELLENCE
Four generations have earned their living from our sod farm serving the Roanoke area, and the standard has changed little since 1921. We grow it properly, cut it fresh, and stand behind anything that leaves the farm. That approach carries through our grass seed sales, our deliveries, and every installation we schedule across Southwest Virginia. Even after twenty years of raising turfgrass, each order still carries the family name.

Our SERVICES
Our sod farm is committed to serving Roanoke clients to the best of our ability.
Expert Guidance
Talk the project through before committing to anything. We ask about sun exposure, drainage, pets, children, and how much mowing you are prepared to take on, then point you toward the variety that fits. Roanoke properties often warrant a different recommendation than those closer to the farm, and we will tell you so.
Sod Sales
419 Bermuda, Zeon Zoysia, and our fescue and bluegrass mix are all cut the day they ship. Order one pallet for a bare spot or a full truckload for a new build. There is no minimum.
Sod Installation
Our turf grass installation for Roanoke properties covers delivery, starter fertilizer, laying each roll by hand, trimming the edges, and stapling slopes so the sod stays put while it roots.
Sod Delivery & Pickup
We deliver to houses, job sites, and commercial properties. If you would like to pick it up instead, call ahead and come to the farm between 8:00 and 8:30 in the morning, Tuesday through Friday.
Seed Sales
Our grass seed sales for Roanoke homeowners are built on our own blend of tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass, mixed for Virginia soil. Homeowners buy it to fill in thin spots and contractors buy it in bulk to seed whole lots.
Sod Sprigs
Sprigs cost less than full pallets when you are covering a lot of ground. We sell them in Bermuda and Zoysia. Plant in spring and they will fill in over the summer.
