Welcome to
Bass Sod Farm
The Bass family has been rooted in Virginia agriculture for over a century. We began farming in Campbell County back in 1921, working roughly 200 acres of crops and livestock before brothers W.B. and Allen Bass moved the business into commercial turfgrass production in 2005.
Today, our sod farm serving Charlottesville covers more than 2,100 acres, with over 250 of those acres dedicated to sod and a team of 25 working the rows. We grow, maintain, and harvest the turf ourselves, which allows us to keep a close eye on quality from our fields to your property. We hold no warehouse inventory. Once an order is scheduled, the harvester enters the field that morning and cuts the grass fresh. By the time our delivery truck or installation crew arrives in Charlottesville, the sod has been off the ground for hours, not days. This short window allows the turf to knit into your soil quickly rather than struggle to recover from storage.
Charlottesville properties often feature a mix of full sun, heavy shade, and rolling terrain that makes a single grass variety a poor fit for every yard. Because we grow several different types, the recommendation we give is based on your specific property rather than what we have in stock. Our fescue and bluegrass mix performs well in Central Virginia and keeps its color through the winter. For athletic fields, commercial frontages, or sunny lawns where heat and wear are the primary concerns, 419 Bermuda and Zeon Zoysia are better suited. All three are raised right here on our farm.
Experienced
The turf grass installation team serving Charlottesville that lays your grass is the same crew that irrigated and fertilized it at the farm. That familiarity shows up in clean edges, tight seams, and straightforward guidance on what your new lawn requires to thrive.
Precision Equipment
Automated harvesters replaced hand stacking on our farm years ago. Rolls come off the field at a consistent thickness with square cuts, which makes for a more efficient installation and ensures the pallets are easier to work with if you intend to lay the sod yourself.
Timely, Reliable, and Cost-Effective
We quote what the work costs and we keep the dates we commit to. Most quote requests are returned within a day. If weather or site conditions require a change to the schedule, you hear it from our team first.
Your Satisfaction, Our Priority
Before our crew leaves your Charlottesville property, we review watering for the first several weeks. You should not be left with open questions or a lawn that is only partially finished.
OVER 100 YEARS OF ROOTED EXCELLENCE
Four generations have earned their living from our sod farm serving the Charlottesville area, and the standard has changed little since 1921. We grow it properly, cut it fresh, and stand behind anything that leaves the farm. Whether you are establishing a residential lawn or finishing a commercial site, each order still carries the family name. That commitment extends to our grass seed sales, our deliveries, and every installation we schedule across Albemarle County. When you buy from us, you are buying directly from the Virginia farm that grew your grass.

Our SERVICES
Our sod farm is committed to serving Charlottesville and Albemarle County clients to the best of our ability.
Expert Guidance
Talk the project through before committing to anything. We ask about sun exposure, drainage, and how the lawn will be used, then point you toward the variety that fits.
Sod Sales
419 Bermuda, Zeon Zoysia, and our fescue and bluegrass mix are all cut the day they ship. Order one pallet for a repair or a full truckload for a new build. There is no minimum.
Sod Installation
Our turf grass installation for Charlottesville properties covers delivery, starter fertilizer, laying each roll by hand, trimming edges, and stapling slopes. Most Charlottesville yards are completed in one day.
Sod Delivery & Pickup
We deliver to homes, job sites, and commercial properties. For pickup, call ahead and come to the farm Tuesday through Friday between 8:00 and 8:30 in the morning. Your pallets will be cut and ready.
Seed Sales
Our grass seed sales for Charlottesville are built on our own blend of tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass. Homeowners buy it for thin spots, and contractors buy it in bulk to seed entire lots.
Sod Sprigs
Sprigs cost less than full pallets when you are covering a lot of ground. We sell them in Bermuda and Zoysia. Plant in spring and they will fill in over the summer months.
